85% jcoco Single Varietal Contamana Cacao by Maeve (Seattle Chocolate)

I bought this bar when it was on sale at Whole Foods Market — they’ve been sitting there for a long time, but $10 seemed like too much to me.
First, it’s three bars, not one, which is kind of nice because they’re easier to share and take with you, but on the other hand, you don’t get that big piece of chocolate you can decorate or wrap in an interesting way.
The packaging is very good - I think it adds significantly to the price: thick printed cardboard, foil with a pink sheen, lots of printing inside, looks solid and attractive.

The chocolate smells sour and bitter, and those same flavors dominate when you eat it. It starts with acidity, then almost immediately a kind of earthy bitterness (which, by the way, is promised on the packaging), but there’s more to it. I think there’s something citrusy - the sourness is reminiscent of citrus. The earthiness turns into the astringency of strong tea, but in between all this, sweetness jumps in and balances everything out.

If you prefer sweeter chocolate over bitter, you probably won’t like it. I liked it, so this is a solid four stars.

By the way, when I tried to figure out how to properly list this bar - jcoco or Seattle Chocolate Company - I went to their website and saw that now they’re called Maeve. That’s that.

Упаковка дуже непогана - думаю, вона теж вагомо впливає на ціну: щільний поліграфічний картон, фольга з рожевим відблиском, багато друку всередині, виглядає солідно й привабливо.

Шоколад пахне кислим і гіркуватим. І ті самі смаки домінують, коли їси шоколад. Починається все з кислинки, і майже одразу з’являється землиста гіркота (до речі, землистість обіцяли на упаковці), але є ще багато чого. Мені здається, тут є щось цитрусове - ця кислинка схожа на цитруси. Землистість переходить у терпкість міцного чаю, але між цим усім туди-сюди бігає солодкість, і все це балансує.

Якщо ви любите більше солодке, ніж гірке, напевно вам не сподобається. Мені сподобалось, тому це хороша четвірка.

До речі, коли я намагався зрозуміти, як правильно позначати цю плитку - jcoco чи Seattle Chocolate Company - і зайшов на їхній сайт, побачив, що тепер вони називаються Maeve. Ось так.
