Venezuela Chocolate Bars Contest 2019

Save Life in Ukraine

#StandWithUkraine

Razom for Ukraine

Today we are repeating one interesting experiment - a contest of chocolate bars from beans of the same origin. Last time that was three bars from Colombian cocoa, today we got five bars from Venezuelan cocoa. The were actually six bars, but one of them - Amedei which we already have tasted before - was a bonus, and did not participate in the contest. Why? Because it contains only 70% cocoa, while others have 74% - 75%.

This time we got blind testing. My beloved wife helped me here, for which many thanks to her! Ksu was giving me the chocolate broken into small enough pieces so that it was impossible to understand what kind of chocolate it was by the pattern. I tried chocolate blindfolded and cleaned the receptors with cool clear water after each sample. The goal was to identify the winner, rate the bars and see if I can guess who is who.

I will describe separately all the bars that we have not tried before, here we just compare them.

So, let's introduce the participants in the order in which it was given to me during this contest:

  1. Our old good friend - 75% Venezuela bar from Pralus. Purchased in Pralus brand store in Paris a month earlier.

pralus bar

  1. 75% Chocolate Bonnat Chuao Venezuela, bought in Paris, in a candy store, a month earlier.

Bonnat bar

  1. 74% Venezuela by Jean-Paul Hévin, purchased in Jean-Paul Hévin brand department in Paris Galleries Lafayette a month earlier.

  1. 74% Venezuela Dark by Black River, purchased in a supermarket at the railway station in Kiev, 3 weeks ago.

  1. 75% Venezuela by Maison Le Roux, purchased in Maison Le Roux brand store in Paris a month earlier

After the first round, I said that Number 1 is similar to Pralus (this smoked taste!), Number 2 seemed to me much more acidic and sharp, but also quite edible. Number 3 won me over with its softness, and I immediately suspected Jean-Paul Hévin's hand. Number 4 upset me with the taste of stale chocolate, if you know what I mean. I really didn’t feel the taste of the chocolate itself. Number 5 seemed to me the most floral.
Then there was a second circle for numbers 2 and 4, and another circle for 1, 3 and 5. And another circle, and yet another one ) it was just delicious))
The verdict came out next - bars took the following places and ratings:
1st place, 5 stars - number 3, Jean-Paul Hévin
2 place, 5 stars - number 1, Pralus
3rd place, 4 stars - number 5, Maison Le Roux
4th place, 4 stars - number 2, Chocolate Bonnat
5th place, 3 stars - number 4, Black River

It is quite possible that the Black River bar could compete better, but alas, despite the long shelf life, it turned out to be in "bad shape".
As for guessing who is who, I guessed 1, 2 and 3 places, but I mixed up places 4 and 5. A very good result, as for me :)

After these bars, the bonus Amedei seemed to me much sweeter, although the percentage difference is not that big. Chocolate all the same seemed tasty to me, but I think that it would have taken 3rd or 4th places in this list.

Venezuelan cocoa is very good!

pralus bar

  1. 75% Chocolate Bonnat Chuao Venezuela,

bonnat bar

  1. 74% Venezuela by Jean-Paul Hévin,

jph bar

  1. 74% Venezuela Dark by Black River,

black river bar

3, Jean-Paul Hévin
1, Pralus
5, Maison Le Roux
2, Chocolate Bonnat
4, Black River
